Marvellous Mathoor – A Jewel in Kanyakumari’s Eco-Tourism Landscape

Tucked away in the scenic heart of Kanyakumari district, the iconic Mathoor Aqueduct—also known locally as Mathoor Thottil Palam—has long stood as a remarkable piece of engineering. Initially built to support irrigation, this towering structure has grown to become a prominent tourist attraction. Now, with the launch of the Mathoor Eco Tourism Project, this landmark is undergoing a spectacular transformation, earning it a new name and identity: Marvellous Mathoor.

This visionary initiative, led by Honourable Minister, the District Collector, and the tourism department, aims to reimagine the area as a premier eco-tourism destination in Tamil Nadu done by Volumetric Fusion Architects.

Mathoor Aqueduct: A Legacy Reimagined

Built in the 1960s to supply water to the fertile lands of Kalkulam and Vilavancode, the Mathoor Aqueduct stretches 1240 feet across a deep gorge and rises 115 feet high, connecting two hillocks with stunning views of the surrounding Western Ghats and Parazhiyar River.

What began as a purely functional irrigation structure has evolved into a major draw for travelers. With sweeping landscapes, coconut groves, and a view that captures the very soul of rural Tamil Nadu, it’s no wonder this bridge is now being celebrated under the banner of Marvellous Mathoor.

Introducing the Mathoor Eco Tourism Project

Recognizing the growing popularity of the site and its untapped potential, the local administration has allocated a substantial ₹3 crore (30 million INR) for the Mathoor Eco Tourism Project. The development includes:

Scenic Park and Viewpoint

A landscaped park and elevated viewing area will offer tourists a chance to enjoy uninterrupted vistas of the bridge, river, and lush countryside. Ideal for photography, relaxation, and picnics, it’s designed to become a favorite public space.

Kids Park

To make Marvellous Mathoor family-friendly, a well-equipped children’s park is being created with safe play zones and fun installations.

Heritage Museum

A museum showcasing the history of Mathoor Aqueduct, local biodiversity, and the region’s cultural heritage will be a highlight for history buffs and school excursions.

Visitor Amenities

Rest areas, eco-friendly toilets, food kiosks, and souvenir stalls are being added to improve the visitor experience while maintaining the site’s ecological balance.

Why Marvellous Mathoor Is a Must-Visit

Whether you’re a nature lover, photographer, history enthusiast, or family traveler, Marvellous Mathoor offers something for everyone:

  • Panoramic views of the Western Ghats
  • Peaceful nature walks across the aqueduct
  • Local delicacies like nannari sarbath, pickled gooseberries, and fresh pineapples

This is more than just a renovation—it’s a reimagining of how eco-tourism and heritage can thrive together.

The transformation of Mathoor Aqueduct into Marvellous Mathoor through the Mathoor Eco Tourism Project marks a turning point in Kanyakumari’s tourism narrative. With the guidance of committed architects and strong government backing, this project stands as a model of sustainable and inclusive development.

As construction progresses, the excitement continues to build soon and, tourists from across Tamilnadu, India will be able to experience the magic of Marvellous Mathoor, where nature, history, and community come together in perfect harmony.
